With the extremely wet spring this year we are now experiencing flooding that is predicted to reach levels similar to, or greater than, 1993. Iowa City has already closed one of the main roads into town which is the main thoroughfare to our church. Tomorrow they are releasing even more water out of the dam in efforts to prevent the water from going over the spillway. This will assuredly cover more than the 25% of our church parking lot that is already flooded.
Here are some pictures that we took last night when we went to see first hand how high the water was at the dam itself.
This was the scene when we first pulled up to the spillway. You can see how odd it looked when we saw the boats looking as though they are parked on the the cement wall.
Along with many others, we climbed the steep slope to take a look over the side.
Notice to the left of us, the sign marking how high the floods of 93 were. Again, they are predicting that or worse in the next several days.
This is looking at the place where they release water from the dam to flow into our river. In the next photo the kids will be standing on the back side of the farthest blue truck.
It is quite scary watching the violent waters rushing out of the opening. As you can see the kids (currently dry) are watching the water crashing around below them when Scott caught this wave of water about to give them their first dose of downpour.
Of course they found this to be highly entertaining and stayed for more.
This is one of my favorite. Scott did such a great job catching the water in motion. Hannah's face is priceless.
Before it was all said and done with everyone was completely drenched with lake water. Scott wanted a group photo. Here is the progression of photos attempted to get them all standing on that "fence" in front of the van.
Attempt #1............
Attempt #2...
Almost got it on #3
On attempt #4 someone slipped yet again and this time it pulled one heavier boy on top of a lighter female resulting in tears, followed by the announcement "that's enough, load up" from the daddy man. All in all, everyone had a great time checking out the calm before the storm.
